Capturing the Invisible: The Story Behind “Spirit of a Musician”

How do you photograph music?

It is a question that has always fascinated me. Sound is invisible; you cannot frame a note or focus on a melody. Yet, music has a physical weight, a texture, a soul.

The image above, titled “Spirit of a Musician”, was born from the desire to capture that exact feeling.

I was spending time with Tino Balsamello, a brilliant pianist whose career has taken him from stages in the United States to prominent collaborations on Italian television. We share a deep, visceral love for authentic, raw blues. That day, he wasn’t playing a specific song or reading sheet music. He was simply improvising a classic blues progression, letting his hands wander over the keys.

As I watched him play, I realized that freezing the action with a fast shutter speed would be a mistake. A sharp, perfectly frozen hand is merely anatomy. It tells you nothing about the rhythm or the emotion filling the room.

I wanted to transcend the physical aspect of the scene. I wanted to give a poetic, sensory feeling to the shot.

By allowing the movement to blur into a long exposure, Tino’s hands lost their solid form and became ethereal, almost ghost-like. The image is no longer just a portrait of a man playing a piano; it becomes a visual representation of the music itself—fluid, moving, and haunting.

“Spirit of a Musician” is a tribute to the unseen connection between an artist and his instrument. With its deep blacks and the stark, elegant contrast of the piano keys, it is an image designed for spaces of reflection. I always imagine this piece hanging in a quiet study, a music room, or above a vintage record player, where the visual echo of the blues can continue to resonate.
